The Nigerian Air force
says it has sustained aerial bombardment of Sambisa forest, with over 280
operational strikes conducted against terrorist targets in the area in the last
one month.
The Deputy Air Theatre
Commander of Operation, Lafiya Dole, Air Vice Marshal Oladayo Amao, who stated
this in Maiduguri, said that the air strikes and bombardments were conducted by
the air component of the operation Lafiya Dole in the north-east.
Amao said that the
ongoing air operations and surveillance within the theater of operation in
Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states were intensified between December 2015 and
January 2016 towards ending the boko haram menace.
He added that the
operations in the period under review consisted of 536 flying hours,
translating into 60.3 million naira worth of aviation fuel, excluding the cost
of maintenance and armament expended.
He further explained
that prominent operations among the missions carried out included an air strike
on 25th December last year, where some terrorist leaders and junior commanders,
who gathered for a leadership meeting in Sambisa forest, were neutralized by a
precision strike.
Several other air
strikes were carried out in and around the Sambisa forest region, further
depleting the capacity of the terrorists.
